The University of Southern Indiana is located in town of Evansville in Indiana. It is publicly-funded and is the fastest growing university in the state. The campus is surrounded by picturesque scenery with rolling hills and wooded forests. It is a pretty and modern university.

There are over 10,000 students at the university enrolled in a wide range of different faculties. The majority of students are from Indiana however they also have lots of students from around the country as well as international students. The student body consists of 60% females and 40% males, with a minority enrolment of 7.5%. After graduating, 75% of students stay in Indiana.

There is a good number of teachers to students, with a ratio of 18:1. Class sizes are small and they have an average of 25 students in every class.

The university began in 1965 as a regional branch of Indiana State University, but gained independence in 1985.

The campus is large and modern, with the university currently being expanded to accommodate up to 20,000 students. There are landscaped areas with benches and fountains around the campus which are popular with students during lunch breaks and study breaks, particularly in the warmer months.

Sports are very big at the University of Southern Indiana, and many of the teams have won national competitions. They specialize in athletics, however they do not have a college football team. The university has come first three times at the GLVC All-Sports Trophy. The university’s mascot is the Screaming Eagle.

One of the great things for students at the University of Southern Indiana is the great accommodation. Nearly all students living on campus are given spacious apartments with large, full kitchens. One bedroom apartments cost $1992 per semester for a shared apartment; $2692 for a single; and $3708 for a super single. Freshmen can stay in residence halls and these cost $1675 for a 4 person suit, or $2550 for a single bedroom per semester.

The university’s own newspaper, the Southern Indiana Review, is widely acclaimed across America and some of the stories have been anthologized in books such as the Best American Short Stories and the Best American Essays.

The university consists of five different colleges offering a range of degree programs - the College of Business; Bower-Suhrheinrich College of Education and Human Services; Pott College of Science and Engineering; College of Liberal Arts; and the College of Nursing and Health Professions. They also offer a range of postgraduate programs and honors programs. Some of the majors that can be studied include dental hygiene, chemistry, criminal justice, geology, kinesiology, and philosophy amongst dozens more.

There is a free wireless internet service across the entire campus for students, meaning you can get online and study wherever you are. During the summer many students choose to do a lot of their work outdoors in some of the many nice gardens and seating areas.

Undergraduate tuition fees are $167.30 per credit hour for Indiana residents, and $398.45 per credit hour for non-Indiana residents. These vary for those who have been given grants or scholarships. There are also other fees such as a one-off matriculation fee of $65 paid on enrollment to cover costs for orientation week and welcome activities. It is the best-value university in the state of Indiana and fees are a lot lower than the private universities.

The university has a Greek system and students have the opportunity to join a sorority or fraternity. Admission into a fraternity or sorority isn’t free and it requires a financial commitment. However, many members tend to get better grades as the Greek system has a great framework for helping students study and learn.

There are many activities to help freshmen settle into their first year of university, including a huge range of activities and programs during the Welcome Week and Orientation.

To be admitted into the University of Southern Indiana you must fulfill several criteria. You generally need to be in the top 50% of your high school class and they prefer that applicants have a cumulative grade point average of 2.5. They require a minimum SAT score of 1230.
